How many? A question that leads to a good study design

One of the first questions that scientists often ask a statistician, when getting to design a study is how many samples or items to include in the study. This rather simple question is in fact quite complicated to answer and is one of the most challenging ones for statisticians. Inquiring about an adequate sample size for a study may open the door to many questions that if answered properly, would eventually lead to a good study design that will improve chances of meeting its goals. The presentation will show a simple example of sample size calculation, however, in a concept that can be generalized to many situations.

The presentation will give the audience a short glimpse at the idea of power analysis and an overview of different considerations to be taken into account when calculating sample size.
